What is tooth decay?

Dental cavities are more often perceived as cavities that are associated with dark colorations. Although it is a preventable disease, there are very few people in the world who have not experienced tooth decay.

Why do teeth decay?

Bacterial plaque that is formed by bacteria hosted in mouth cavity can produce acid from the residues of sugary and floury foods in the mouth. These acids dissolve the mineral tissue of the teeth, causing the enamel of the tooth to deteriorate and ultimately the onset of tooth decay and pits that dentists call cavities.

Who are prone to tooth decay?

Since decays are formed as a result of the combination of bacteria with sugary and floury foods, the danger applies to everyone. However, those, who have a very high proportion of carbohydrates and sugary foods in their diet, are at higher risk, but the risk will further increase if the fluoride content in their water is very low. Although saliva creates a natural defense mechanism against the acid formed by bacterial plaque, it cannot prevent decay on its own. Diseases or medications that reduce the flow and amount of saliva also accelerate the formation of decay. Therefore, dentists often recommend sugar-free chewing gums, as they increase the flow of saliva.

Can tooth decay be prevented?

Yes

Brushing your teeth after breakfast in the morning and before going to bed in the evening and using dental floss regularly every day is the most effective way. Since food residues accumulate most often in groves and pits on chewing surfaces of the teeth and on interdental surface, where the teeth touch each other, small-headed toothbrushes should be preferred. The inner and buccal surfaces of the teeth, the chewing surfaces, and the tongue should be brushed and dental floss should be used for interdental regions. Brushes should be moderately hard or soft-bristled and should be changed periodically. The brush bristles should not be worn out and should be kept in a way that does not carry bacteria. One must not use toothbrush of any other person. By using fluoride toothpaste while brushing your teeth, one should take advantage of the role of fluoride in preventing tooth decay. Fluoride mouthwashes that play a complementary role can also be used, which also eliminate bad breath and provide a feeling of freshness and cleanliness.

Try to consume sugary foods at main meals and not to eat anything between meals is another measure.

Dentist visits at regular intervals is the best way to prevent decay or diagnose it early. In addition, it is necessary to see a dentist immediately to increase success of treatment and reduce potential difficulties, if your teeth are sensitive to hot and cold foods and drinks, you have toothache or early-stage decays with chalky color or cavities with brown stains.
