WHAT IS ORAL CARE?

Plaque control (oral hygiene/oral care) is the removal of the nutrient residues (dental plaque) from the teeth and adjacent tooth surfaces on a regular basis and the prevention thereof. Dental plaque is the most important factor in dental cavities and periodontal diseases. Therefore, oral care habits are quite critical in terms of long-term health of both gums and teeth. Furthermore, patients should check plaques correctly and regularly for success of treatments and maintenance of treatment outcomes.

Though brushing is a completely accepted part of daily life and good oral care, it is not enough on its own. Because plaque formation starts from the interfaces that the toothbrush cannot reach, periodontal diseases mostly originate from the interfaces. Plaques accumulate most often on the interdental surface of the molar and premolar teeth followed by the interdental surfaces of anterior teeth. In addition, gum deformities and elongated, exposed root surfaces can cause difficulty in completely removing the plaque in patients with history of periodontal disease.
